At first it was because Kairi inspired him to want to explore and he wanted to have adventures with her and Sora outside the island. I also don't like how they changed Riku's desires for leaving Destiny Islands. I don't mind Riku no longer having a crush on her, but at least make them friends. It's like they want to forget that Riku once had some kind of crush on her since they are pushing Sora/Kairi. Riku and Kairi have really grown apart as the KH games continue. When you're friends with someone only because you have a friend in common, if that friend in common isn't physically there to keep you all hanging out together, you're likely not hanging out with the friend by association.īut that's just how I've interpreted Riku and Kairi's relationship over the years. Didn't Nomura say something about wanting to show how friends can grow apart or something because of the different paths they take? Which honestly might be his cop out to start writing Kairi out of the story because he obviously regrets creating her?īut it is a realistic scenario. It's like that, except Sora is Person A, and Riku and Kairi are B and C hanging out with A. They're more like friends by association? Like, you know when you're in a group of friends and you're friends with Person A, but Person A is also friends with Person B, so you hang out with Person B a lot because you're both hanging out with Person A? Honestly, I don't even think Riku and Kairi were ever, like, the best of friends. Hush, I know how that claim went last time, but a girl can dream. My hope is Riku is the one to train Kairi in the next saga and that he will not be surprised at all when she proves she’s a force to be reckoned with, because he’s always known she is. I’m all for Riku and Kairi mutually gushing and bonding over their adoration of Sora, who doesn’t, but c’mon, let them be, y’know, friends on their own. I dunno man, it sticks in my craw that even from their very first scene together in KH1 Kairi can dish back what Riku throws and didn’t second-guess herself like Sora did around him. And she is the one who chases Riku, grabs him and stops him from leaving, to bring the three of them together and show Sora that it is really Riku. He was going to leave until she stopped him, he almost always hesitates when it comes to Kairi, and although the shame is evident upon the reveal, the fact that he allows her to even do so, when he spent all game outrunning Sora and protecting from the sidelines, imo, shows just how much he trusts her. Sora disappears and Ansem is able to manifest his physical form, and it’s only when he says that Kairi has fulfilled her purpose and moves to eliminate her that Riku manages to briefly wrest control from him, the only time he is capable of it iirc, and say “No, you won’t use me for this!” And Kairi, does NOT want to leave him, you can see the indecision on her face when he tells her to run, but she also trusts Riku and listens to him because, now matter how painful it is, he’s right, and she trusts him despite everything that has transpired.Īnd in KH2, it’s Kairi who is the one to reveal his Ansem-face. Ansem has had full control and possession over Riku’s body at this point and had Kairi not called out within Sora at the last second while he swung the blade, ‘Riku’ very well could have struck Sora down then and there. One of my favorite moments in KH1 for them is when Sora releases Kairi’s heart. So, what’s your favorite aspect of their duo? Since we’re all frustrated over the fact that Kairi and Riku didn’t even get a single damn scene or one-on-one interaction together during the entirety of KH3, let’s re-examine the fact that these characters are supposed to care about each other, and I truly believe they do, but the writing of their friendship has been utterly shafted since KH2.
